Apple achieves this without compromising build quality or structural integrity. Although slightly thicker than the 13-inch MacBook Air, the profile at this screen size is a marvel. The 15-inch Surface Laptop 5 is the only laptop that comes close, and it measures 0.57 inches. Achieving this level of thinness necessitates the remarkable efficiency of Apple Silicon in a fanless construction.

However, bear in mind that portability does have its trade-offs. Notably, the width of the device, particularly when compared to any of Apple's 13-inch MacBooks, showcases the most significant distinction. Rest assured, it can still slide into an average backpack or laptop compartment in a suitcase. However, it might claim more real estate on a coffee shop table or dorm room desk.

Apple Macbook Air Performance

The 15-inch MacBook Air offers a solitary processor option: the M2. This configuration features 8 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores—an exact match for other MacBooks, including the 13-inch MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. Hence, this marks the third laptop in Apple's lineup leveraging the same chip. The sole contrast lies in the GPU cores, with the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air equipped with a slightly weaker version featuring only eight GPU cores, allowing Apple to price it at $1,099.

Furthermore, the 15-inch MacBook Air bears an identical price tag to the infamous 13-inch MacBook Pro—an existence that defies logic (but that's a topic for another discussion). The crux of the matter is that this model forms an integral part of Apple's MacBook lineup, all exhibiting remarkably consistent performance levels.

In testing, the 15-inch MacBook Air aligns precisely with expectations, harmonizing with other M2 MacBooks. The larger form factor doesn't inherently yield more performance, primarily due to the device's remarkable slimness at just 0.45 inches. In quick benchmarks like Geekbench 6, the M2 holds its own, particularly in single-core performance, positioning it among the swiftest laptops on the market. A score of 2,606—the highest among laptops tested, excluding gaming laptops—speaks volumes.

Of course, prolonged graphics tests or resource-intensive single-core trials like Cinebench R23 don't elicit the same optimism. Being one of the few fanless 15-inch laptops available, extended performance isn't its forte. As observed with M2-equipped laptops, Apple permits internal temperatures to soar before intervening to throttle performance. Substantial room remains between the M2 and M2 Pro in terms of both GPU and CPU capabilities, or even when comparing to Windows laptops featuring discrete GPUs like the RTX 4050.

Regarding heat, the surface temperature of the 15-inch MacBook Air can escalate, particularly near the keyboard's upper region and beneath the hinge. While this might go unnoticed during light web browsing, it becomes conspicuous when running resource-intensive applications.

However, the MacBook Air's forte lies in efficiency rather than raw power. As expected, the MacBook Air 15-inch embodies remarkable efficiency. When not engaged in all-core benchmarks or exporting timelines, the laptop remains pleasantly cool to the touch. Most notably, it remains completely silent.

This efficiency shines brightest in battery life. Similar to other Apple Silicon MacBooks, the 15-inch MacBook Air delivers astounding battery endurance. During light Chrome-based web browsing, the laptop persisted for an impressive 18 hours and 48 minutes. This surpasses even Apple's promised 18-hour mark. Granted, battery life might wane with resource-heavy applications, but for the target audience, this laptop is designed to accompany you through a full workday and well into the next.

Display, Webcam, and Speakers

The 15-inch MacBook Air introduces a fresh display panel, yet it shares many characteristics with the 13-inch MacBook Air's screen. With a higher resolution of 2880 x 1864, it retains the same 224 pixels per inch density. Although physically larger, the pixel density remains consistent. Understandably, this adheres to the standard LED IPS display, distinct from Apple's XDR mini-LED panels—those remain exclusive to the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro. Notably, mini-LED panels peak at 1,200 nits brightness with HDR content, an impressive feat.

In the realm of SDR content, however, the 15-inch MacBook Air's display proves equally vibrant and luminous. Boasting 500 nits of brightness, my measurements confirmed 475 nits, accompanied by 90% AdobeRGB (and a full 100% sRGB) color space coverage, achieving a Delta-E of 1.23. These commendable scores position the laptop's display among the finest IPS laptop screens, particularly within its price range. An excellent canvas for photo editing and graphic design endeavors, it elevates the laptop's value proposition.

Another standout feature is the speakers, which transcend the competition—Windows or otherwise—at this price point. The speakers on the 15-inch MacBook Air stand out impressively, even surpassing those of the 13-inch variant. A remarkable achievement, considering the device's slimness. Although the 14-inch MacBook Pro does exhibit marginally more robust sound when compared side by side, the audio quality produced by this laptop remains truly remarkable.

The webcam doesn't boast the same pedigree. While commendable, it doesn't distinguish itself significantly from other 1080p webcams, unlike the speakers. It is perfectly suited for daily video calls for work or school, with the added benefit of excellent speakers and microphones.

Macbook Air 15 Inch Ports

For better or worse, Apple has made ports a defining aspect of its “Pro” line. On one hand, this is logical. The inclusion of an SD card slot and additional USB-C ports proves invaluable for professionals reliant on high-performance peripherals or swift access to camera files.

The crux of debate lies in external monitor support. Many individuals might not require the extra performance of a MacBook Pro, yet they yearn to connect multiple displays to their workstations. Regrettably, the 15-inch MacBook Air restricts you to just one external display. This limitation has persisted with Apple Silicon MacBook Airs and remains consistent with this latest iteration.

Solutions like Thunderbolt docks can circumvent this limitation, but some users might still opt to upgrade to the MacBook Pro to acquire the desired ports. A downside, as the MacBook Pro comes with a heftier price tag and justifies an upgrade primarily for enhanced performance.

Additionally, all the ports are clustered on one side, except for the headphone jack, naturally. While not a deal-breaker, it can be mildly frustrating when searching for an outlet, necessitating a complete repositioning. If your work often takes you to coffee shops or coworking spaces, you'll encounter this situation sooner or later.

When Size Matters (and When It Doesn't)

I'm not an advocate for multiple sprawling monitors to bolster my productivity. I find contentment with a 13-inch device, cherishing mobility, even if confined to different corners of my home. If your sentiments align with mine, one of the 13-inch MacBook Air models, whether the economical M1 variant or the sleeker M2 version, should be your preference. The 15-inch MacBook Air amplifies screen real estate at the cost of portability and dimensions.

However, it's challenging to ignore the allure of the 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 15-inch MacBook Air is Apple's maiden voyage into offering a larger laptop without an accompanying boost in performance. This phenomenon isn't exclusive to the 15-inch MacBook Air; it permeates designs like the Surface Laptop 5, Samsung Galaxy Book Pro, and LG Gram. These models offer both 13-inch and 15-inch options, with performance being the primary differentiator.

In all scenarios, the 13-inch variant garners greater popularity, relegating the 15-inch to a more niche audience. Nonetheless, I am inclined to believe that the 15-inch MacBook Air will secure its own following. While it doesn't redefine the landscape, it adds another layer of complexity to the MacBook selection process, amplifying the confusion. Yet, those who precisely match the intended user profile will find enduring satisfaction in the daily utilization of this device.
