Once you've verified the presence of spark plugs, the next task is locating them. In most contemporary cars, spark plugs reside near the engine's top, securely attached to the cylinder head. Keep in mind that they might be concealed by wire tangles or a plastic covering. Subaru owners should search on the engine's side, as should those with flat-four or flat-six powered Porsche models.

Additionally, you'll need to determine your engine's spark plug type and quantity. Usually, the number of spark plugs matches the cylinder count. For instance, a four-cylinder engine requires four plugs, while a V12 engine demands twelve. However, exceptions exist. Certain engines, like select Mercedes V6s, employ two plugs per cylinder. Consult your owner's manual or online resources for accuracy.

Step 2: Access the Plugs

Peek under the hood to identify thick wires or coils sending electricity to each spark plug. Modern vehicles typically employ one coil pack per cylinder, while older models often rely on a single coil for the entire engine. Unbolt the coil pack (or gently detach the wire) to reveal the upper section of the plug.

Step 3: Remove the Old Plugs

Prior to removing the spark plug, use a clean cloth or compressed air to clear debris around it. This ensures nothing drops into the cylinder during plug extraction—an outcome to avoid. Once the area is tidy, use a socket to loosen the plug. Given its likely tightness, some effort might be necessary for removal. A ratchet can greatly ease this process. Before aiming for a three-pointer into the nearest trash bin, take a moment to scrutinize the spark plug's business end. It's an informative snapshot of your engine's status, particularly in older vehicles. A black-coated electrode indicates an overly rich fuel mixture, while a white-coated one signals a too-lean mixture.

Step 4: Adjust the Gap for New Plugs

Use the gauge to set the gap correctly on the new spark plug before installation. The gap measurement refers to the space between the two electrodes. This value varies among cars, typically falling between 0.02 and 0.06 inches. Getting this right from the start prevents future issues. Seek guidance from your dealer, local auto parts store, or the internet for precise measurements if needed. Precision is key.

Step 5: Install the Fresh Plugs

With the gap properly adjusted, you're ready to insert the spark plug. Reassembly follows the reverse sequence of disassembly, though we advise using a torque wrench for proper tightening. Expertly gauging the tightness ensures no over- or under-tightened plugs, which can lead to costly damage.
